Magazines Run Online

Turning the page?
The numbers are sobering. In the US 525 magazines were shut down in 2008. So far in 2009, 87 more titles have folded.
In a sign of the times, the April issue of Portfolio magazine set a dubious record. With 106 total pages and 21 ad pages it is the slimmest monthly issue ever published by Condé Nast. The revenue flow for magazines is simply drying up.
eMarketer estimates consumer magazine print ad spending in 2008 was down 7.1% to $13 billion. 2009 is expected to be even worse, with ad spending forecast to drop a precipitous 16.2%.
“The shift in print advertising revenues to other media, particularly the Internet, will continue to exacerbate the problem,” says Carol Lynn Krol, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, Consumer Magazines: Rethinking Paper and Pixels. “As the ranks of publications keep thinning, 2009 will be a year of survival for only the fittest publishers.”
What’s to be done?
“Years of inflated circulation rate bases have backfired,” says Ms. Krol. “Magazines chased volume, banking on a larger set of readers to justify advertising rate increases. Unfortunately, that bloated universe of readers often proved less profitable.”
Some publishers, such as Newsweek, have responded by pruning their audiences to a smaller, more desirable demographic. The big move in publishing, however, is online. But the transition may be coming too late for many titles.
“While there are pockets of innovation, many print brands have fallen far short of the mark when it comes to their online presence,” says Ms. Krol. “Given the state of the business, publishers need to act quickly to capitalize on brand assets and provide accessible, compelling content to readers—who already have access to a wealth of content online.”
“You have to get your brand online—95% of the magazines out there haven't really done that,” Jim Spanfeller, CEO of Forbes.com, tells eMarketer. “They’re not putting out a product that is compelling for an online audience.”
Digital ad revenues for consumer magazines averaged 6.4% in 2008, according to an analysis of 11 major magazine group publishers by Advertising Age, suggesting the publishers have a long way to go in building their digital businesses.
Time Inc. tallied the most digital money in 2008—$245 million. However, that still only accounted for 10% of its total ad revenues. On the other end of the scale, Bauer Publishing had no revenues traced to digital ads.
“The good news is that—unlike many newspaper publishers—magazine publishers have not simply taken all their offline content and offered it online free of charge,” says Ms. Krol. “As a result, they have the opportunity to develop premium content models and to package the offline and online products together.” [eMarketer]
Online Banking During a Financial Crisis

Customers want financial advice and security.
Consumers have flocked to the Internet for advice on how to cope with the global financial crisis, according to comScore World Metrix. The research company said visits to financial news and research sites grew 10% to 8.8 million visitors in September, during the height of the financial crisis, from the previous month.
“With world markets exhibiting such volatility, the Internet has proven itself to be the go-to resource for those with a vested interest in the markets, as well as concerned consumers generally,” said Herve Le Jouan, managing director at comScore Europe.
The turmoil has not kept consumers from conducting financial transactions online.
In a study released in November, Nielsen Online said credit card account management and home banking were the second- and third-most-popular transaction types for 2008, with 36% and 35% of consumers conducting transactions, respectively.
Still, security is top of mind for many online banking consumers. To reassure the skittish, Bank of America has been offering customers Norton AntiVirus software at a discount, and Wachovia’s Security Plus product was unveiled to customers through a splash page upon login. [eMarketer]
How Much Will Online Travel Slow?

Digital bookings shift into a lower gear.
Online travel bookings will total $98.2 billion in 2008, up just 9% over 2007, according to PhoCusWright. The company said that some online travel providers would fare better than others, with rail sales growing by 28%, while hotel bookings would rise only 8%.
If the numbers prove true, this will be the first year of mere single-digit growth for US online leisure/unmanaged business travel. However, online growth will still be twice as high as that of the total travel market.
PhoCusWright said that reasons for online’s continued success included consumer comfort with online purchasing, perception of the Web as having the lowest prices and supplier disincentives for booking through other channels. The company also said sales from leisure/unmanaged business travel sites will represent 36% of the total market in 2008, up from 34% in 2007.
eMarketer’s most recent online travel sales estimates for the US were created in August 2008, in the midst of the economic slowdown but prior to the financial industry crisis. At the time, online leisure and unmanaged business travel sales (including airline, hotel, rental car, vacation package, intercity rail and cruise) were predicted to grow 12% this year to reach $105.1 billion.
Jeffrey Grau, senior analyst at eMarketer, said that if the market were being assessed today, the estimate would be lower and more in line with PhoCusWright’s. [eMarketer]

ESPN and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) have reached a digital rights agreement that will extend and expand their current agreement through 2013. The agreement includes rights for ESPN.com, ESPN360.com, ESPN's mobile initiatives (ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN Mobile Publishing, ESPN MVP), content on emerging platforms including video game consoles, interactive television and portable devices (ex: iTunes/iPod, Zune) and syndication of ESPN-licensed content.
The deal also covers all new platforms ESPN creates or develops relationships with through the end of the agreement, and includes digital rights that extend worldwide (except select Asian and Pacific Rim markets). Paired with ESPN and Major League Baseball's most recent television deal and ESPN's deal for exclusive U.S. terrestrial radio rights, the combination represents ESPN's most comprehensive multi-platform collection of baseball rights ever.
"This agreement further solidifies the great relationship we have with Major League Baseball and together with our television deal, allows us to bring the game of baseball to more fans than ever before," said George Bodenheimer, President, ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports. "Our goal is always to deliver sports to fans across any platform, and this is yet another agreement that fulfills that strategy."
Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said, "Major League Baseball is very pleased with this opportunity to enhance our partnership with ESPN. We have a great relationship with ESPN and this new agreement will bring our game to our fans in a variety of new and exciting ways."
More than ever, fans consume sports across multiple media, and over the past five years ESPN has pioneered the strategy of delivering sports wherever and whenever fans seek it. In the past three years alone, ESPN has reached nearly 20 major multimedia rights agreements.
Under the new agreement, ESPN digital media's coverage of Major League Baseball will include:
- Live Game Streaming: ESPN360.com, ESPN's signature online TV network, and ESPN Mobile TV can simulcast all Sunday Night Baseball, Monday Night Baseball and Wednesday Night Baseball telecasts. ESPN digital media platforms will also be able to stream the Home Run Derby and other special MLB events for which ESPN has television rights.
- Expanded Online and Mobile Highlights: ESPN.com and its network of global sites will feature more highlights than ever before, and ESPN's Mobile platforms (ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN MVP) will have newly expanded rights to deliver video highlights by themselves and as part of original shows.
- Interactive Television: ESPN will work with MLBAM to develop interactive TV applications around baseball games and content.
- Interactive Online Applications: ESPN digital media platforms will continue development and enhancement of ESPN GameCast and may develop other interactive applications.
- Alternative Platforms: ESPN will be able to deliver MLB content as part of its offerings on alternative platforms, such as content download services like Apple's iTunes Store and console game systems such as Microsoft XBox Live, as well as other platforms which may be developed during the course of the agreement.
- Content Syndication: ESPN will have rights to syndicate some of the MLB content including video and data, that it presents on ESPN digital media platforms to ESPN digital media syndication partners. [FierceWireless]

Heading to the store to research online purchases
Many studies in the US have focused on the relationship between online and offline retail sales. Typically, consumers comparison shop and get product information on the Internet before buying the product in a brick-and-mortar store.
However, new data from the USC Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future examines the opposite situation: consumers ages 50 and over who have researched offline before making purchases online.
The researchers found that about two-thirds of consumers ages 50 to 69 had researched their online purchases in stores. More than one-half of consumers ages 70 and over had done so.
"Online seniors are a lucrative consumer segment that Web retailers cannot afford to ignore," said Jeffrey Grau, senior analyst at eMarketer. "They have higher incomes and are more likely to be employed than seniors overall."
From 2006 to 2011, eMarketer estimates that the percentage of Internet users ages 62 and older will increase at a 7.6% average annual growth rate—more than twice the 3.1% growth rate for the entire US Internet population.

Will Detroit meet the buyers of its dreams on the Web?
Rising fuel prices have made 2008 a tough year so far for automakers in the US. As they examine every possible method to reach potential buyers, online television may benefit, according to J.D. Power and Associates' "2008 Power Auto Online Media Study."
Nearly seven out of 10 new-vehicle buyers surveyed said they went online to find information on TV shows. CNN.com was their top destination, followed by MSNBC and ESPN.
Arianne Walker, director of marketing at J.D. Power, told eMarketer that although survey participants were not asked about specific activity at those sites, they were asked if they watched TV content online—so it was logical to assume that some of them were watching shows and clips at the top sites, rather than just looking for information about programs and actors.
"As new-vehicle sales shrink, understanding which advertising mediums will provide the best balance of audience reach and composition is absolutely critical," Ms. Walker noted. "As more new-vehicle buyers seek information regarding television shows on the Web, advertisers can benefit from increasing their focus on this medium."

Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, today announced that Google, a top web property in all major global markets, has signed a long term license agreement with the company that gives Google access to Tele Atlas maps and dynamic content in more than 200 countries around the world.
The agreement spans Google's current and future map-based services and navigation offerings across mobile, online and desktop environments. These include the Google Maps and Google Earth services and mobile applications such as Google Maps for Mobile. The agreement also gives Tele Atlas access to edits for its maps from Google's community of users, whose suggested changes can help the company further increase the quality and richness of Tele Atlas maps.
"Google's innovation and leadership is undisputed, and we are proud to have the opportunity to be the map foundation for one of the world's most progressive web companies," said Bill Henry, CEO of Tele Atlas. "This agreement is important too because it gives us access to input from a significant online community of map users, whose feedback can help us keep our maps fresh and accurate."
"Geospatial data enhances global search significantly by organizing data and delivering results based on location," said John Hanke, director of Google Earth and Google Maps. "Tele Atlas' map quality and the company's innovative approach to business were the key drivers for our decision."
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. [FierceWireless/PR]

TV or not TV? That is no longer the question.
According to Nielsen, the average American watched 4 hours, 34 minutes of TV per day during the 2006/2007 season. That's an increase of 36 minutes per day from a decade earlier.
Looking further forward, eMarketer estimates that TV advertising spending will reach $75.4 billion in 2012, up from $67.8 billion in 2007—a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of only 2.1%.
Online advertising spending, in contrast, is forecast to grow annually at 19.2% over the same period and will overtake TV advertising spending in the US within 10 years.
"At eMarketer, we believe TV viewers will watch more, not less, TV content in the future," says Ben Macklin, senior analyst at eMarketer and author of the new report, TV Trends: Consumers Demand Control. "But they will be accessing and viewing it in different ways from the past."
eMarketer estimates that by 2012 nearly 25% of all TV content watched each day will be time-shifted, on-demand, on the Web or on a mobile device.
"Video-on-demand, digital video recorders, the broadband Web and 3G mobile phones are giving consumers new ways to access and watch TV," says Mr. Macklin.

Online Buying Diversifies, but Concerns Remain

Consumers would still like to see goods in person.
As consumers in the US have grown comfortable with shopping on the Web, they are buying a wide range of products and services, according to the USC Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future. Online purchases now include travel arrangements and electronics as well as birthday, holiday and wedding gifts.
The Center contrasted this with earlier e-commerce behavior, when US consumers were more concerned about the reliability and accuracy of product descriptions, as well as privacy and security. At that time, they were more likely to buy products that would be the same no matter where they were purchased, such as books and CDs.
Today's online buyers still have privacy and security concerns, as revealed by a Pew Internet & American Life Project study conducted last year, which focused specifically on concerns by age. Older Internet users were more likely to be concerned by the drawbacks of online buying.
Worries about sharing credit card numbers and personal information on the Internet started outweighing the benefits of locating hard-to-find items and convenience for online consumers ages 50 and over. The preference to see products in person before buying them online was equal among consumers in all age brackets.

Online Buyers in France on the Rise

Broadband and e-commerce go hand in hand.
Nearly two-thirds of Internet users in France ages 11 and over said they had purchased something online, according to a Q1 2008 survey by Médiamétrie. That was up from the six out of 10 respondents who said they were online buyers in the previous year's study.
In comparison, eMarketer estimates that nearly 68% of Internet users in the US ages 14 and older will buy something online this year.
Why are the numbers so close for the two countries? For one thing, broadband is closely associated with online purchasing. eMarketer estimates that 58.2% of households in France will have broadband by the end of 2008, compared with 62.7% for the US.
Online buyer demographics are similar in both countries as well. The main difference is that in France, male Internet users are more likely to be online buyers than females. In the US, online buying is nearly equal by gender.

The UK Plugs into Web TV

Juggling broadcast, DVRs and Internet TV
As in the US, UK broadcast television is not about to lose its pivotal role in the advertising landscape. TV claimed 21.8% of a record UK ad spend in 2007.
Yet even while TV viewing time in the UK continues to grow, on-demand viewing and downloading are growing much faster. Broadband translates to TV on the Web. High-speed lines already reach a majority of homes in the UK, and Internet usership in the country will top 38 million in 2008, bringing with it a transformation of the TV landscape.
Time-shifted television is part of this transition. More than one-half of UK Internet users watched on-demand or recorded TV in April 2008, according to a Redback Networks-sponsored study conducted by YouGov.
Of the 57% who time-shifted content, about one-third watched at least three hours of on-demand TV per week. Nearly one-half of those online in the UK said they had watched video or TV on the Internet, with most using Internet-based TV services for on-demand viewing (70%).

Have you heard? Banks are playing games online—and that's a good thing!
The banking business is changing in ways no one would have predicted a few short years ago.
Of course, banks are going through credit market collapses, a period of threatened recession and economic jitters. But even so they continue to invest in their Web sites, adding more online products, services and transactions.
In fact, the fundamental changes bank marketers are instituting online may be ultimately more far-reaching and lasting than today's headline-grabbing events.
Given consumers' concerns about security and privacy, banks are understandably cautious when it comes to tapping into the marketing and community-building potential of social networks, blogs, instant messaging and other Web 2.0 platforms. Most banks have adopted a wait-and-see approach regarding using new media for promoting products, offering client services and engaging in customer interactions.

The Online Television Picture in Europe

Dialing in on new viewing habits The question has arisen before: How will old and new media converge?
"Broadcasters have no choice but to embrace new technology and delivery channels," says Karin von Abrams, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, Web Television in Europe: An Expanding Scene. "But they are desperate to ensure they can still monetize their content, even when they are no longer monopoly distributors."
According to Motorola, already by January 2007 nearly one-half of all broadband users in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK were watching TV on the Web over high-speed connections.
By late 2007, the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA) found that 30% of Web users in 10 major European countries were watching TV, film or video online.
A Blinkx survey showed that by February 2008 over one-half of UK adults ages 16 and over with Web access said they had watched TV online. One in five had watched full-length TV shows, movies or sports.

Online Retail Growth Is Slowing

Economic woes online, too?
Although consumers are reacting to the economic downturn by spending less, this will create more of a hardship for retail stores than for online retail outlets.
"Store sales will be hit harder than Internet sales because affluent shoppers, who form the core of online buyers, tend to ride out economic downturns better than lower- and middle-income consumers," says Jeff Grau, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, US Retail E-Commerce: Slower But Still Steady Growth.
eMarketer estimates that US retail e-commerce sales (excluding travel) will reach $146 billion in 2008, up 14.3% over 2007. "Still," warns Mr. Grau, "over the next few years online sales growth rates will steadily decline."
There is little reason for panic, however.
"A drop in the number of new online buyers is an inevitable sign of the maturation of the online retail channel," says Mr. Grau.

An old digital format still has plenty of life left
Compared with today's virtual worlds, e-mail is solidly Web 1.0—an almost archaic communication channel.
Yet e-mail works, and marketers and advertisers keep putting it to new uses. Moreover, consumers—whose opinions are the ones that matter—genuinely like e-mail. Nearly three-quarters of adult e-mail users in North America said they used it every day, according to an April survey conducted by Ipsos for Habeas.
Two-thirds of adult respondents said they preferred e-mail for communicating with businesses. Just as many—and this is the important part—said they expected to still prefer e-mail five years from now.
"Far from being eclipsed by Web 2.0 and other emerging communications methods, consumer expectations suggest that e-mail will be the workhorse channel around which future online communications will revolve," said Des Cahill, CEO of Habeas, in a statement.

Google CEO: Mobile Advertising to Generate More Revenue Than Today's Web

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that the next major growth wave for Google in terms of search engine marketing is the mobile Internet. He cited the iPhone as the first mobile device with a good web browser and that more devices will come to market, enabling advertising to become personal. He predicted that within a few years, mobile advertising would generate more revenue than advertising on today's web.
Schmidt said he was less enthusiastic about the advertising possibilities of video portals like YouTube and DoubleClick, and said he generally wasn't happy with the advertising prospects of Web 2.0 in general. Google has invested some $900 million in a deal with MySpace that saw the search engine as the exclusive advertising and search engine. It reached many users but was proving difficult to establish the ad network. "Some things work, and others just don't--but the mobile Internet always works," he said. [FierceWireless]
More Than One Billion Users Will View Online Video in 2013

Sparked by increasing broadband penetration and rising connection speeds available to a growing percentage of the world’s population, over-the-top video has seen phenomenal growth in very recent years. A new study from ABI Research forecasts the number of viewers who access video via the Web to nearly quadruple in the next few years, reaching at least one billion in 2013.
“The rapid expansion of broadband video creates opportunities across a number of market sectors,” comments senior analyst Cesar Bachelet. “A wide variety of actors aim to gain a share of this fast-growing market: not only content owners such as the BBC and NBC Universal, and Internet portals such as AOL and Yahoo!, but also a range of new entrants including user-generated content sites such as YouTube and Dailymotion, broadband video sites such as CinemaNow and Lovefilm, and Internet TV providers such as Apple and Zattoo.”
Increasingly, the methods used to deliver this content are changing, in order to reduce the strain on broadband networks. These include content distribution networks that cache content closer to the user, peer-to-peer networks which leverage users’ PCs, and hybrid networks which combine these two approaches.
This proliferation poses a challenge for traditional pay-TV operators. They cannot afford to do nothing. According to Bachelet, however, “Pay-TV providers should refrain from knee-jerk responses, or adopting defensive measures aimed at discouraging consumers from using those services. That would only produce resentment from subscribers and likely defections from their services.”
Instead, he recommends something of an “if you can’t beat them, join them” approach, aimed at turning the threat into an opportunity. Particularly for those who own broadband infrastructure, PC-based services can be an ideal complement to their core business. “They can offer access to content via this increasingly popular alternative platform,” says Bachelet. “They can offer content beyond that available through traditional channels, and they can reach a new set of subscribers.”
They can also adapt Web content for distribution via their traditional model, and include advertising support. [ABI Research]

The Asia-Pacific online gaming market is expected to generate $21.1 billion in 2013, according to In-Stat's "Online Gaming in Asia: Strong Potential for Growth" report. The research company said that increased household Internet penetration and new content for online games would drive growth.
Many gamers in the region subscribe to online games, which accounts for most of the industry's revenues.
"The online gaming market in the Asia-Pacific region is growing in tandem with the significant increase in consumer Internet use," said Stephanie Ethier, analyst at In-Stat, in a statement. "In addition, the number of market players is rapidly expanding; therefore, improved content and a greater variety of games are keys to success in this market."
China is the fastest-growing online gaming market in the region and is expected to become the largest by 2009. [eMarketer]
Does the Web Inspire Consumers to Buy?

Or does it suggest what they could buy?
Although adult consumers in the US use the Internet to research and discover new products, it is usually not the key factor in final purchasing decisions, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project's newly released "The Internet and Consumer Choice" study.
Pew surveyed consumers about how they discovered various products. Of respondents who bought music in the prior year, 83% found out about music from the radio, TV or in a movie. Nearly two-thirds followed the advice of friends, family members or co-workers. More than one-half said they went to band Web sites or streamed song samples.
However, when it came to actually choosing what to buy, only 12% of music purchasers surveyed said that online information had a major impact on their decision.
"The Internet is a tactical tool for shoppers who use it in product research, and usually not a game-changer in people's purchasing decisions," said John B. Horrigan, associate director at Pew, in a statement. "Its impacts show up in efficiencies in the search process. Even for a digital product such as music, people more often than not buy in stores, not online."
