Making the most of niche listening
Advertisers in the UK who sponsor podcasts have a potentially sizable audience, according to Radio Joint Audience Research Limited (RAJAR) UK's "Podcasting and Radio Listening via Internet Survey," conducted in April and May by Ipsos-MORI.
More than one-half of responding podcast downloaders said they would be at least somewhat interested in downloading free podcasts that included advertising. Only 31% said they would be interested in paying for ad-free podcasts.
RAJAR said the average podcast user subscribed to 3.6 podcasts and spent just over one hour per week listening to them.
More than four out of 10 UK Internet users ages 16 to 54 have downloaded podcasts at some point, compared with 29.5% of US Internet users, according to Universal McCann's April 2008 "Power to the People: Social Media Tracker" report.
Regular podcast downloaders are more rare, according to a Wiggin-sponsored study of UK adult Internet users conducted in January by Entertainment Media Research. Only 8% of respondents said they were regular podcast listeners, and only 2% paid to subscribe to podcasts.

Online video ads are ready now. Mobile video ads will take longer.
With the WGA writers' strike over, Hollywood is getting back to work. As TV shows and movies go back into production, the work stoppage over revenue from content used online, on mobile phones and on other channels may fade into memory.
The percentage point deals have been settled. But how much ad revenue is actually at stake?
Parks Associates addressed this question, projecting that new multimedia platforms in the US will generate $12.6 billion in advertising revenue by 2012.
Broadband multimedia ads will account for more than $6.6 billion of that total. Parks Associates told eMarketer that "broadband media" included online streaming video and downloadable media; the latter consisted of podcasts and ad-supported music and video download services.
“The floodgate is open, and the deluge of ad spending to these new platforms is irreversible,” said Harry Wang, analyst at Parks. “There must be interest alignment among major stakeholders to avoid frictions like the Writers Guild strike that hinder content flow to these new platforms.”

Podcasts Aren't Just for Young Nerds

Many narrowcasts, many different audiences.
They don't all listen to the same programs, they don't all use iPods, and they don't all come from the same background.
They are podcast users, and they defy clear-cut connections between usage and factors such as gender, age and income level.
Arbitron and Edison Media noted a nearly even gender split between male and female US podcast listeners, with 25- to 34-year-olds making up the largest single age bloc with 24% representation in the study.
An age-based Bridge Ratings study spanning nearly two years showed growth in the percentages of older podcast listeners between August 2006 and May 2007.
The increases ranged from a 10-point spike in the percentage of respondents ages 25 to 34 who said they listened to podcasts (from 45% to 55%) to a doubling in the response rate among listeners ages 50 to 64 (from 8% to 16%).

Ever since podcasting was introduced, the question has been the same: Will anyone listen? The answer is definitely “Yes.”
eMarketer estimates that the total US podcast audience reached 18.5 million in 2007. Furthermore, that audience will increase by 251% to 65 million in 2012. And of those listeners, 25 million will be “active” users who tune in at least once a week.
”As the US podcasting industry matures it is unquestionably creating a listening audience,” says Paul Verna, eMarketer Senior Analyst and author of the new report, Podcast Audience: Seeking Riches in Niches, “And along with a larger audience comes increases in advertising spending tied to podcasts.”
Driven by this audience growth, US spending on podcast-related advertising (including sponsorships) will rise to $435 million in 2012, up from $165 million in 2007.

Tiny steps toward more public communication.
The buzz around collaborative Web 2.0 technologies keeps going, and it is easy to think that every firm now has a blog, a wiki and an RSS feed.
In fact, a global survey of internal and corporate communications professionals found that more than half use blogs, online video and RSS, or plan to do so in the next 12 months.
The Melcrum study of communications at large firms also found more than 40% are using podcasts and social networks, or say they are planning to do so.
Other data suggest that while a lot of firms say they plan to start blogging, that remains a matter of intent, not reality. Moreover, few companies have public blogs. Those that do appear to blog mainly for internal communications.
Socialtext tracks public blogging by Fortune 500 firms and Global 1000 firms. The ongoing study, headed by Chris Anderson of Wired, currently credits 8% of the Fortune 500 with public blogs, and just 4% of the Global 1000.

Podcasting: Audiens Meningkat, Pendapatan Iklan Tidak

Setiap hari jumlah podcasts (siaran pesan-pesan lisan melalui Internet) terus bertumbuh.

OK, that's just 17 million people, but still....
Only a minority of US Internet users listen to podcasts, but according the "Podcast Downloading" report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, roughly 12% of Internet users say they have downloaded a podcast so they can listen to it or view it at a later time.
The audience is growing. That number compares to 7% of Internet users who reported downloading a podcast in Pew's February-April 2006 survey.
Mary Madden of Pew, the author of the report, estimated in a podcast interview that 17 million people had downloaded podcasts for use on their computers or iPods.
Again, six months earlier an estimated 10 million users had had a podcast experience. In other words, there has been a 70% increase in the number of people who have downloaded podcasted audio or video content.
