Japan has long led the way in mobile use and innovation.

According to the BBC, the Japanese Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) trade group reported that mobile phone subscriptions in Japan had topped 100 million.

According to the BBC article, "The 100.22 million subscriptions at the end of the month was 0.4% higher than the 99.83 million on 31 December 2006."

Checking the TCA site, however, it said that as of January 31, 2007, the total number of mobile phone subscribers in Japan was 95,315,200.

The discrepancy may have come about because the BBC combined mobile phone subscription holders with those using a personal handyphone system (PHS).

Sticking with mobile phone users, NTT DoKoMo led all carriers in Japan, with 52,220,800 subscribers. KDDI was second, with 27,433,900 subscribers, and Softbank third, with 15,660,500. [eMarketer]
