Teens Trail in Mobile Gaming

According to the NPD Group, more than 29 million US consumers play video games on their mobile phones, and over seven million users download games to mobile devices in an average month.

Although a greater percentage of teens play mobile games compared to adults, teens accounted for only 15% of the mobile games downloaded in 2006 — three in 10 games downloaded were by consumers ages 25 to 34, and 27% of downloaders were 18 to 24.

In another somewhat surprising statistic, half of mobile gamers ages 18 to 34 said they play a mobile game every day, while only 41% of teens claimed they played mobile games daily.

The reason for the anomaly could be simply that there are more adult mobile phone subscribers than teen subscribers.

"While teens definitely have a higher incidence than adults for mobile gaming, they still play second fiddle to their older counterparts in overall game play and downloading," said Anita Frazier of NPD. "While adults currently control the lion's share of mobile game downloads and play, as more teens enter the mobile subscriber base we'll see these numbers start to reach parity." [eMarketer]
