Online activity helps PC gaming power up.

PC gaming, which saw declining revenues in 2005, is bouncing back, according to the NPD Group, as reported by the New York Times.

Retail sales of PC-based games in the United States exceeded $970 million in 2006.

eMarketer estimates that total US video game revenues will reach $19 billion by 2011.

World of Warcraft and its 8 million subscribers have driven the PC gaming rebound, but the industry is getting help from the hardware sector as well. PC and chip makers are promoting gaming on more powerful computers. Microsoft is also making PC gaming more attractive with console-like features and easier online play.

The online component is key for marketers who want to reach gamers, because targeted ads can be placed in online games in real time. Placing ads in offline games, by contrast, can require months of upfront work with game developers.

Online gaming will comprise about a fifth of all video game sales by 2010, according to JupiterResearch, as cited in a Kagan Research publication.
