Japanese Mobile Music Sales Double 2007 Totals

By Jason Ankeny

Digital music sales are surging in Japan, with the Recording Industry of Japan reporting mobile and online revenues grew 128 percent during the first half of 2008. According to the RIAJ, consumers downloaded 20.3 million singles, albums and music videos during the first six months of the year, up 143 percent in unit volume year-over-year and generating $39.5 million in revenue.

Mobile sales (i.e., ringtones, ringbacks and full-track downloads) ballooned to 219.5 million units, more than double 2007 totals. Of course, the digital gains are offset by a decline in physical product revenues--the RIAJ reports sales of CDs were off 6 percent.
