Online Sales of Mobile Phones to Triple by 2012

Purchases of mobile phones conducted over the Internet will grow sharply, accounting for 21% of all mobile phone sales worldwide in 2012, according to Informa Telecoms & Media.

Total mobile phone retail revenues will reach $180.9 billion by 2012, meaning that online sales will reach $38 billion the same year - more than double 2007 revenues.

“Online retail for wireless is certainly only a nascent market," said Angela Stainthorpe, research analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media. "As broadband penetration increases and online shopping entrenches its place in the retail landscape, customer expectations and the cost benefits of online distribution will be difficult for the mobile industry to ignore.”

By 2012, Informa predicts that Europe will lead the world with 47% of online handset sales.

North America will be second that year, just ahead of an exploding Asia-Pacific market that will see sales quadruple to $4.5 billion. [eMarketer]
