Apple [iTunes] to Offer Fox Movies on Demand

Jon Swartz, USA TODAY, reports that shares of Apple closed just under $200 on Thursday after a published report that the computer maker had entered into a new video-on-demand deal with News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox studio.

Under the arrangement, Fox movies would be available for rental on Apple's iTunes for $2.99 and consumers could watch them for a limited time, according to The Financial Times, which cited a person familiar with the situation.

Apple is expected to announce the deal at the Macworld computer show in San Francisco on Jan. 14, the Times says.

It would be the first rental deal Apple has reached with a movie studio, following haggling with studios over pricing. Apple has sold Disney movies online, but only for purchase at higher prices.

Apple also is in talks with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros to make their movies available to buy or rent from iTunes, the Times says.
