Young Adults Click with Holiday Shopping

Clothes and gift cards top wish lists.

Young adults in the US will increase their holiday spending by 10% this season, to $634 per person, according to researcher Youth Trends.

Tops on their shopping lists: apparel and accessories (78% plan to make a holiday-related purchase), followed by gift cards (64%) and technology and communications-related devices (41%).

"America’s youth have an increasing amount of spending power," said Debra Aho Williamson, senior analyst at eMarketer.

The survey found that an increasing number of respondents are using the Internet to shop for holiday gifts: 27%, up from 23% last year.

However, not all of the holiday spending will be for gifts. One-fourth, or $158 of the average $634 in spending, will go toward purchases for themselves, Youth Trends found.
