Should Junk Food Ads Be Restricted?

Advertising for foods with lots of sugar and fat should be limited to specific hours, according to a poll conducted by Lightspeed Research.

Internet users were asked if they supported government action to fight childhood obesity by restricting TV ads for foods with high sugar or fat content to certain hours of the day.

Almost a quarter opposed such action, while 70% supported it. The remainder said they were unsure.

Women supported the measure more than men, with 73% in favor of it, compared with 63% of men. Twice as many men as women opposed such action.

The same survey was also fielded in eight other countries, all of which liked the idea of restricting junk food ads even more than US respondents did.

Nearly 9 in 10 respondents in Australia, Italy and Sweden supported junk food TV ad restrictions. Over 80% of respondents in France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain supported such measures.

Respondents in all surveys were self-selecting, which usually means that respondents had a pre-existing interest or opinion on the subject. [eMarketer]
