Portable video game revenues from Nintendo and Sony are estimated to pass $10 billion in 2007, according to DFC Intelligence.

The market is led by Nintendo's DS, which was the best-selling system of 2006. Nintendo sold over 110 million GameBoys during that model's production, and David F. Cole of DFC said that "the DS has the potential to be the best-selling interactive entertainment platform ever."

Although home consoles get more attention, the handheld gaming market is surprisingly robust. "Under the right scenario," said Mr. Cole, "the combined installed base of the DS and PSP could exceed that for the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 by 2011."

A rise in the popularity of handheld gaming by adults, such as with the Nintendo title Brain Age, is driving the trend.

Existing console game publishers have found it is possible to make over $100 million in revenues from a single Sony PSP title based on the right franchise. [
